A 7 minute video explaining all about the 12 Pillars of Mental Fitness.

On 6th January 2016 my mental health spiraled out of control, I remember the day well, because it’s the day my life changed.  I’d been struggling with panic attacks, but on this particular day, as I went to take a shower before going to work I physically couldn’t lift my leg to climb into the bath, all I could do was go back to bed; I wasn’t able to return to work.

My biggest takeaway from the experience was that I relalised I had no clue about mental illness, I remember having thoughts that the doctors would have to perform brain surgery on me, I was terrified, some people told me it would pass soon, and others told me it could last years!

Over time I’ve found 12 areas that I focus on to help me manage my mental fitness, I call them my 12 Pillars.

A key area I focus on is ‘Neuroscience‘! Learning the science of the brain may sound like hard work, but trust me, it was key in helping me understand my situation better, and I know it will help you too.

I’ve learnt that there are no quick fixes to mental illness, and there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to managing it.  It’s all about balance, our mind and body are made up of very complex systems, but we often misuse them as we run stress marathons that force them to work overtime.

Working on my 12 Pillars helps to restore some of that balance; even improving just one area can have a positive knock-on effect to others; likewise, neglect one and the impact can be negative.  It’s a juggling act but you’ll find that that is what managing mental fitness is, it’s about lifestyle choices that you have to keep working on every day of your life.  You may still have good days and bad days, but you will feel you have more control and understanding so you can work with my mental illness rather than against it.

“The more you know about the way something works, the deeper its meaning for you.”
